Don’t Be So Old Fashioned: A Sophisticated Sip for Your New Ritual

Non-Alcoholic Old Fashioned

One of the things I’ve learned through living alcohol-free is that the ritual matters.  For years, that 5:00 PM glass of wine was my "reward" at the end of the day, to "take the edge off." When I stopped drinking, I realized I didn't need the alcohol; I needed a way to signal to my brain that the workday was over and it was time to relax.

That’s where mocktails come in. They aren't just "juice for kids"—they are sophisticated, adult drinks that help you "surf the urge" and feel like you’re still part of the party.

I want to share a favorite recipe from my book, The Happiest Hour: Don’t Be So Old Fashioned.

If you were so distracted by wine (like I was!) that you never really explored the world of classic cocktails, you are in for a treat.  This non-alcoholic version of the classic Old Fashioned is sophisticated, deep in flavor, and surprisingly easy to make .

I highly recommend using one large ice cube.  It prevents the drink from diluting too quickly, keeping those bold flavors front and center.  Plus, it just looks "over fifty and fabulous"!

Don’t Be So Old-Fashioned Recipe

From The Happiest Hour: Delicious Mocktails for a Fabulous Moms’ Night In

Ingredients:

  •  2½ ounces NA whiskey
  •  ½ ounce maple syrup
  • 3 dashes aromatic bitters (I love All The Bitter for that perfect "bite")
  •  1 large ice cube
  •  Orange peel, for garnishing
  •  1 luxardo cherry, for garnishing

Method:

  1.  Place the NA whiskey, maple syrup, and aromatic bitters in a rocks glass.
  2.  Add one very large ice cube to the glass.
  3.  Gently stir with a bar spoon (or a long iced-tea spoon) for about 30 seconds until the drink is well chilled.
  4.  Add the orange peel and a luxardo cherry for a classic, elegant finish.
